Photography major, year two. My whole life is a Pentax K1000 my aunt gave me and a darkroom that smells like a swimming pool had a nervous breakdown. I shoot film. Not because digital is bad — because I like that I can't check. You take the shot, you don't know, you carry it around for two weeks, and then it's either there or it isn't. That gap is the whole thing for me. What I shoot: people who don't know I'm shooting them. Empty diners. My roommate asleep on the couch with the TV on. Parking garages. Hands. Always hands. What I'm bad at: portraits where the person is posing. I freeze up. I say "just, uh, be normal" which has never helped anyone in history. I will develop your roll for you if you buy me a coffee, and I will absolutely judge your composition, gently, out loud, while it's in the fixer. Currently working on a series about the last hour before a place closes. Diners at 10:50pm. Laundromats. Fluorescent light does something to people when they know they have to leave soon.
Nan Goldin. Someone with darkroom access and flexible hours. A model who will stand in a river in October for me — I'll pay in prints and a very sincere apology.
